A new smartphone app to address opiate overdose

In October 2011 I wrote an article listing some harm reduction smartphone applications that I would love to see produced.  Included in the list of ideas was a training app that provided guidance to lay people (ie non medically trained friends, relatives and peers) about the administration of naloxone, a drug that can effectively reverse opiate overdose. A little while after posting the article I was made aware of the great work of U -Turn Training, (some very enterprising blokes from Belfast) who were already working on just such an idea.

After what I am sure was a lot of hard work, U-Turn have announced the release of the application suitable for Android phones.  You can read the full story of the development of this innovative project at the U-Turn website.

P.S. If you are admiring the Keep Calm Carry Naloxone iPhone/iPod case featured in the image accompanying this article, you might want to check out the equally innovative Nigel Brunsdon’s Redbubble account and purchase one of your very own!
